Grand slam1

It was an early start for all the team setting of early saturday morning so that we were all at the event by 9am, ready for an 11am start. The Women's event was first to start, with England being represented by two teams. This event comprised of two round robin groups, the first of which featured England 'A', Ireland 'A' and Wales and the second Featured England 'B', Ireland 'B', Scotland. The winners of each group then competed in a final and as things turned out, both English teams were victorious in their respective groups. This all England final went the way of the form books, in that the England 'A' beat their fellow English squad mates to the gold medal.

The English Ladies teams were as follows;

Female Team A: Natalie Williams, Katie Hurry, Carla Burkitt,  Siobhan Haynes

Female team B : Stephanie Thorndick, Alice Goudie, Chloe Sheldon,  Rio Smith

The men's event followed at 2:30pm with seven man Grand slam2teams representing each of the four home nations. This was again to be a round robin style tournament, where every member of the team fought in each of their three matches. Three points were awarded for a win, one for a draw, with no points for a loss. By the end of the competition, Scotland had amassed the most points securing the tournament victory, with Ireland, England and Wales respectively slotting in behind. England's final points tally of thirty points was just one point behind that of the Irish team.

Grand slam3

England captain Rory Daniels lead the way for the English team, securing three out of three wins for his efforts. He was the only man in the team to achieve this feat, with our own Barry Meanwell helping the team along with a three fight sequence of one loss and two draws. This was a respectable outcome for Barry's first outing as an England international.

Barry was chosen to fight at number three against Scotland (1-2 loss), number seven against Wales (1-1 draw) and finally at three again for the match against Ireland (1-1 draw).

Wado UK are proud of Barry's achievements at this competition!
